Italian Wontons + Sewing Class Potluck

Just 8 weeks ago, GG and I were newbies to sewing and what a long way we've come thanks to our wonderful sewing teacher, Regina. Today marked the end of our workshop and we celebrated with -- what else -- food of course!

I originally wanted to make my usual chinese style pork wontons but GG said she would be bringing pasta so I thought, why not make an Italian wonton? Because I was pressed for time, I didn't get a chance to make a dipping sauce but next time, I'll definitely make some type of sweet and tangy balsamic vinegar-ish sauce to go with it. Still, I think they turned out pretty good.

Here's our spread:
Queso dip and chips, Italian wontons and meatballs, Spaghetti Carbonara,
mango bars, pound cake, and pineapple upside down cake.

Italian Wontons
Makes about 25 wontons.

For the meat filling:
1/2 pound ground beef
1/2 pound ground pork
1/2 cup plain bread crumbs
1/2 cup frozen spinach, drained and chopped
1/2 a large onion, finely minced or grated, with juice
1 tbsp. garlic, finely minced
1 tbsp. Italian parsley, chopped
1 tbsp. dried Italian herb seasoning
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese
1 tsp. dried chili flakes
1 egg, beaten
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper

For the wontons:
Wonton wrappers
Oil for frying

Method:

In a large bowl, add all the meat filling ingredients together and mix well. Use your hands to evenly distribute all the seasonings into the meat.

To prepare the wontons, place a teaspoon of the meat filling in the center of the wonton wrapper. Moisten the edges of the wrapper with some water and fold over to form a triangle. Brush the bottom corners with more water and fold in to create the shape of an envelope. Repeat until all wontons have been made.

Pour about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil into a frying pan and heat to about 300 degrees. Gently slide the wontons into the pan and fry over medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Remove and drain on a wire rack or paper towels.

Tip: If you have have leftover meat, form them into meatballs, dip in beaten egg then bread crumbs and fry them up. They taste great that way too.

Here are some pictures from our class. If you're local to the San Gabriel Valley in So. CA
and are looking for a sewing class or workshop, definitely look up Regina's class through
the City of Duarte. Regina (in the colorful rainbow tank top) has made it so easy for
someone like me to learn how to sew and more importantly, has given GG and I lots of
encouragement for us to continue on our own.

Here are some of my sewing projects which I've had the confidence to attempt outside of class:
A simple dress for my daughter made from an old t-shirt, a floral print skirt for my daughter
and lastly, a kitty themed pillow and pillow case for my niece.
